The climb from Santa Cruz to La Laguna goes on the TF12, well known by road bikers it’s a scenic road that winds up from the sunny beach to the misty Anaga mountains. The route then enters the pine forest, the climb to Mt Teide goes on a gentle gradient by old gravel roads and it’s more than 10 hours ride to the next town Vilaflor. A final singletrack descends to the tourist beaches of Los Cristianos.
Anaga mountains are made of rugged peaks and deep ravines, covered by a lush green laurel tree forest, usually shrouded in mist well deserves the name of “enchanted forest”.
San Cristobal de La Laguna was funded by the end of the 15th century, former capital and oldest university of the canary islands. It’s the first non-fortified Spanish colonial city, the urban grid plan and architecture inspired many Spanish settlements in South American during the following centuries. The Old Havana or Lima clearly reminds La Laguna. Those old streets and buildings have been declared a UNESCO world heritage site.
Mount Teide is the highest peak in Spain, a massive volcano rising 3700mts above the ocean and over the clouds. Surrounded by lava fields and pine forests, it’s another UNESCO world heritage site.
